On July 15-16, Igor Jürgens the Professor of the Department of Risk Management and Insurance and the Science Advisor of MCUR MGIMO and R.A. Aliyev the Director of the Center, the head of the Department of Integrated International Ecological Problems and Natural resources took a business trip to Azerbaijan.

On July 15, MGIMO representatives met the chairman of Central Bank of the Republic of Azerbaijan E. Rustamov and provided details about the work of the Center of Sustainable Development, and perspectives of its activity, both on national and international levels. The parties discussed the implementation of 17 Sustainable Development Goals in Azerbaijan, the reason why the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development was created. In preparation for the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties of UNFCCC (COP26) which will take place in November of 2021 in Glasgow, the proposal to prepare the climate change agenda report with the assistance of specialists of the Center was suggested, as well as to hold scientific conference on the basis of MGIMO, with the participation of Russia and Azerbaijan as leading countries on extraction of carbon raw materials.

On the same day at the ADA University, the meeting with the Vice Rector F. Ismailzade and his colleagues took place. Two new master’s programs starting on September 1 in MGIMO were presented: “Sustainable Development Management” (on the basis of School of Business and International Proficiency) and ” Environmental Management in the Corporate Sector” (implemented by the School of Applied Economics and Commerce). Following the meeting, the parties agreed about cooperation in training specialists in the field of sustainable development.

During the visit, the president of the All-Russian INS Union Igor Jürgens met with the leadership of the Association of Insurers of Azerbaijan. The participants signed a memorandum, according to which the parties would cooperate in the field of information exchange, preparation of legislative and regulatory acts, academic exchange and organization of joint events, and also discussed the topics of ESG strategy and sustainable development in the insurance market. it was pointed out that the first insurance company in Azerbaijan to accept ESG-transformation, by introducing non-financial reporting in the insurance market, would be Ateshgah IC.

On July 16, R.A. Aliyev met with BP’s Vice President for Public Relations, External Affairs, and Strategic Issues in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey B. Aslanbeyli and Advisor to the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan on Innovation and Sustainable Development V. Rajabli. The parties discussed cooperation with the MCUR on the climate policy implementation, decarbonization and ESG strategy in the oil and gas industry of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
